Emotional Wellbeing

Emotional well-being is described as a state of mind in which acceptance, a positive mindset, and a kind and calm presence contribute to successful aging. It allows the Elder to adapt to aging, changes, and challenges and is the foundation for family and community engagement. Emotional well-being is strongly intertwined with family and community well-being. An Elder's emotional well-being is also impacted by their environment, including the land and waters of their region.

Spirituality

Religious and spiritual practices play a vital role in Elders’ lives. It creates opportunities for community engagement, strength, and overcoming life challenges. Praying is a practice that provides caring and strength.

Community Engagement

To age well, an Elder engages in community events, takes on leadership roles, and guides and teaches youth. In rural communities, community engagement is naturally interwoven into daily life. Through generativity, values, community and family history, and traditional practices are being shared to preserve knowledge to promote cultural continuity. This aspect is bidirectional and mutually beneficial.

Native Way of Life

Traditional practices are considered to promote health, emotional well-being, and identity. Traditional practices provide opportunities for mindfulness, forgiveness, kindness, and connection to past, present, and future generations. Traditional foods nourish the body and the mind.

Physical Health

Physical health refers to the Elder’s ability to stay active and involved. This holistic approach involves the body, mind, and soul and caring for physical needs using Western medical services. Traditional practices and Native foods nourish the body and facilitate physical health.

Historical Context

Historical context involves the time since first engagement with settlers, involvement of church, boarding schools, war, and oppressive structures. All of these may influence how Elders use services and programs or engage with medical providers.
